The Collector

The owner of one of the largest private Zsolnay collections in Budapest has had quite the career. After obtaining a degree in production engineering and welding engineering, András Szabó left the public sector to embark on his own journey.

He utilised his success in business to acquire and meticulously renovate one of the true gems of the Avenue of City Park (Városligeti Fasor in Hungarian), the villa designed by Albert Kőrössy. Here, he established the Kőrössy Szalon, intended to introduce various branches of art to the public while also serving as a venue for networking—all the while enriching one of the most significant private Zsolnay collections in Hungary.

An Art Nouveau Villa in Budapest

The ResoArt Villa is one of the most elegant examples of Art Nouveau villa architecture in Budapest, combining architectural heritage, cultural history and private collecting under one roof. In the second half of September 2023, the beautifully restored building—designed by architect Albert Kálmán Kőrössy—opened its doors to the public for the first time in its 120-year history.

By the end of the 19th century, the area around the City Park had become one of the most prestigious neighbourhoods in Budapest. Industrialists, doctors, merchants, artists and architects all chose the Városligeti Fasor for their family homes, transforming the district into a showcase of architectural ambition and refined urban living.

Kőrössy designed the private villa in 1899, moving in with his wife, Dóra Paula Leóna Mária Román (Rosenberg), in 1900. His signature architectural language is visible throughout the façade—ornamental details inspired by nature, curved balconies, and vibrant ceramic elements that stood out in the otherwise eclectic streetscape. Today, these features make the ResoArt Villa not only a cultural destination but one of the rare surviving residential examples of Art Nouveau design in Budapest.

Following a multi-year restoration, the villa has regained its original elegance while meeting the needs of a contemporary museum environment. Visitors can now explore both the architectural heritage of the building and the extraordinary private collection it houses.

ResoArt Foundation

The Resonator Cultural and Art Foundation was established in 2021 by businessman and collector András Szabó, who has been a leading figure in the Hungarian business sector for more than thirty years. His success enabled the preservation, restoration and presentation of the artworks he had assembled over decades as a private collector.

The Foundation’s mission includes:

  • managing and showcasing the Zsolnay and visual arts collection

  • organising professional exhibitions and cultural events

  • supporting research and educational initiatives

  • fostering collector circles and thematic clubs

  • ensuring long-term conservation of the artefacts

Through these activities, the Foundation aims not only to protect Hungary’s cultural heritage but also to expand public access to it in meaningful and contemporary ways.

A Cultural Experience in an Art Nouveau Setting

The ResoArt Villa today stands as a rare combination of architectural restoration, private collecting and cultural engagement. As one of the few accessible Art Nouveau villa spaces in Budapest, it offers visitors the opportunity to experience Zsolnay ceramics in their original residential context—surrounded by period architecture, decorative details and the atmosphere of turn-of-the-century elegance.

Whether you are a collector, an art enthusiast, or simply curious about Hungarian Art Nouveau, the ResoArt Private Museum provides a unique and memorable encounter with one of the most remarkable artistic legacies in the country.
